Opposition Popular Congress party (PCP) under the leadership of Dr. Hassan Abdallah Al-Turabi officially nominated the southerner prominent figure Abdallah Deng Nhial as the party's candidate for the presidency. Nhial acquired a percentage of 76% in a competition with three others during the PCP shura meeting.
PCP leader said, in a press conference held in Khartoum that the party agreed unanimously to nominate Nhial for the presidency instead of Al-Turabi himself considering that the principles of the party do not allow for joining the party secretary-general position and the presidency. Al-Turabi affirmed that the opinion of the majority is to benefit from his ideas to preach the party's manifest besides his age which doesn't allow his nomination for the position of the President.
He added that his party decided to run the presidential elections in the first stage to disperse the votes, hence affecting the domination of the NCP candidate (President Omer Al Bashir), adding that if any political party announced its candidate then the NCP will not acquire the 50% votes needed, but if that parties withdrew from the election then President Al Bashir can acquire the majority which is against the desire of the opposition parties. Al-Turabi disclosed that in case of several candidates for the presidency the National Elections Commission (NEC) will be forced to organize a new round and here the opposition parties can nominate one candidate to compete with President Al Bashir after the dispersion of votes in the first stage. He accused the NEC as not daring to speak out about a second round for the presidency post if the candidate failed to get the not less than 50% of the votes
