SPLM and the Return of Conscious
(Opinion)
According to news articles the second southern person to assume vice presidency post in Sudan after signing of Addis Ababa Agreement in 1972, General Joseph Lagu after Abel Alier has welcomed his appointment as Presidential Advisor in the GoSS and announced readiness to serve the citizens of the South.
President of South Sudan, Salva Kiir Mayardit appointed five presidential advisors including Joseph Lagu.
Despite this recent step taken by Lt. Gen. Salva Kiir as it came at the end of the interim period, but it still deserves appreciation.
In the news also the GoSS is working out a plan for the voluntary return of southerners who remain in the north for years according to their reasonable justifications.
However, the SPLM since it started ruling the south in 2005 dealt with the region as if it is its exclusive property, hence it banned all non-SPLM southerners and opponents from entering their home villages fearing that they might rebel against the movement.
Now the SPLM has become conscious when it allows and encourages for the voluntary return to convince those southerners who remained long years in the north to come back to their home villages.
Back to Joseph Lagu who was dropped from the memory of the SPLM all these years, we believe that he can do a lot and the SPLM can utilize his expertise and previous position in the country. The best he can do is to advise the GoSS President on national issues that require attention at this crucial time when the South is heading to referendum for self-determination for the people there. As advisor Lagu should engage in constructive delivery of wisdom which is needed for good governance.
